Promoting Science at Home

Science is part of our world and is all around us. Thinking scientifically has a positive effect on learning across the curriculums. The process of thinking things through, trying to figure out the how’s and why’s, and discovering answers to their own questions leads to greater mathematical and language arts skills and motivates children to continue to learn more. Children learn science concepts and conduct science experiments in the classroom, but so much more science education can be attained outside of the classroom. Parents can integrate scientific thinking, questioning, exploring, and observation into daily interactions with their child. Schools can provide strategies and information to families to help promote science instruction in the home and help children connect the science concepts that they are learning in the classroom to the world around them. This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to collaborate on strategies for building positive home/school relationships, focusing primarily on effective parent involvement in teaching and practicing science with their child.
