Annual Conference: Great Place to Work Award

2005 - A Great Place to Work Award Winner

March 06, 2008

FREDERICKTOWN R-I

Just ask the employees of Fredericktown R-I what makes their district a great place to work, and you will hear the pride in their voices as they tell you.  The benefits are wonderful.  Even with recent cutbacks, Fredericktown has continued to provide full health, life, and dental coverage to its employees.  They have a cafeteria plan, fully functioning Career Ladder available, and flexible leave days.  In addition, Fredericktown R-I encourages professional advancement by reimbursing teachers up to $250 yearly to attain new certifications.  The school board recognizes its employees yearly with Teacher Appreciation Days, and awards longevity with pins at an end-of-the-year luncheon.

It’s always fun to go to work with people you appreciate and who appreciate you.  The employees help each other by donating days to a sick leave pool in which all employees can take part.  Further, there is a cohesiveness among the teachers that by example encourages their students to perform well.  That unity is also evident in that the average teaching experience at Fredericktown is 13 years--just above the state average.  When teachers come to Fredericktown, they get involved in their school and they come to stay.

One employee of the district reported that the school’s Superintendent, Mr. Burlison, is fair and really cares what people think, whether it is staff, students, parents, or community members.  He keeps the good of the school district in mind.

Community members support Fredericktown R-I by volunteering to read to students or work on outside projects at school.  In turn, the high school students in the A+ program and the FACS (Family and Consumer Science) program support the community by volunteering as tutors for younger students and helping out at local day care facilities.

Finally, Fredericktown R-I boasts a component that many schools lack-that of parent involvement.  The parents of Fredericktown students volunteer and stay involved.  PPP events are well attended and very successful.

Practical Parenting Partnerships is proud to present the 2005 Great Place to Work Award to Fredericktown R-I.
